Sensor sizes to scale#
Sensor format comparison#
“Stops vs FF” is the difference in total light gathered at the same exposure — a good predictor of noise at equal output size.

Crop factor calculator#
Why sensor size matters#
A larger sensor collects more total light at the same f-number and shutter speed, so images are cleaner at equal print size; it also gives shallower depth of field at the same framing. Smaller sensors make lenses smaller and lighter, extend telephoto reach and give more depth of field — useful for macro, wildlife and travel.
The crop factor is the ratio of the full-frame diagonal (43.3 mm) to the sensor's diagonal. Multiply focal length by it to get the full-frame equivalent field of view, and multiply the f-number by it to get equivalent depth of field.
