Digital Photography Instruction
I believe that most people learn best by either one on one instruction or instruction in small groups. Hands on experience is also very beneficial to learning. I offer photography instruction by private or in small groups. Each session is tailor made to meet your needs. A list of sessions that I teach is below.
Basic Exposure
This session is geared towards the beginner to intermediate photographer.
The topics covered in this session are:
- Basic exposure - learn what aperture, shutter speed and ISO all mean.
- Camera Settings - learn how to change and adjust your camera settings.
- Learn how to interpret your cameras Histogram
Plan on 2-3 hours for this session.
Advanced Exposure
This session is geared to the intermediate photographer and/or the photographer that has already taken the Basic Exposure course. You should be comfortable shooting in one of the Semi-Automatic exposure modes i.e. Aperture Priority.
The topics in this session are:
- Build on the basics from the Basic Exposure session.
- Take full control of your exposure and shoot in Manual Mode.
- Learn how to use an Incident Light Meter.
Plan on 1-2 hours for this session.
How to improve your Nature/Bird Photography
This session covers the following qualities that I feel are important for most any nature photograph.
- Sharpness/Details
- Lighting/Exposure
- Perch
- Background/foreground
- Position of bird in the Frame
- Head position
- Unique Aspect

Flash for Nature Photography
This session is geared towards the intermediate to advanced photographer that wishes to learn how to use a flash for nature photography. A good understanding of exposure is needed before taking this session.
Using flash can turn a cloudy day into a sunny one! Flash is often used in bird photography to brighten colors, improve contrast and add a catchlight. Learn how to use external flash in this workshop. For some examples of bird photographs taken with flash visit this Flash Examples page.
Topics in this session are:
- Learn what Fill Flash and Flash as Main light are
- Learn the difference between TTL and Manual flash.
- Learn how to set your flash to obtain the ideal balance of flash and ambient light.
- Learn how to use a Better Beamer
Plan on 1-3 hours for this session.
Photoshop/Lightroom
This session covers everything from an introduction to Photoshop and/or Lightroom to advanced post processing skills. Each session would be tailor made to your skill level.A sample of topics are:
- Getting your photos on to your computer
- Keywording
- Organizing your photos
- Cropping
- Adjusting Color Balance
- Optimizing RAW images
- The clone tool
- Curves/Levels
- and many more

Session Cost
Session costs are $75.00 per hour. If you have a small group (4 or less) that would like to take a session together then cost would be $55.00 per person per hour.
